Natural choice for home owners

Polonite® offers a proven, low-maintenance solution for chemical-free phosphorus removal in decentralized wastewater treatment.

Our Resources

Everything you need to plan, install, and maintain your Polonite® system

Straightforward guidance for public authorities, engineers, and installers working with decentralized or centralized phosphorus removal systems.

The Process

A cost-effective, passive system designed for minimal maintenance interventions.

The filter media is typically supplied in pre-filled, ready-to-install filter bags, designed to facilitate straightforward “plug-and-play ” installation. Polonite® is available in three standard sizes—370 kg, 500 kg, and 1,000 kg—to accommodate various treatment capacities. Compatible tanks are available for each filter size and can be sourced direct ly from Polonite Nordic or through authorized distributors.

Planning

Site-specific assessment and selection of appropriate filter size and tank configuration based on treatment requirements and local conditions.

Installation

Polonite® filter units are delivered as pre-filled bags and integrated into the treatment system using a straightforward, plug-and-play approach — minimizing time and technical complexity.

Maintenance

Routine inspections are minimal. The filter media requires replacement only after its treatment capacity is reached. Systems are typically dimensioned to last for more than one year, depending on load and flow conditions.

Why It’s Better for Your Home

Clean phosphorus capture for circular, nutrient-smart reuse.

Our patented technology uses natural minerals to remove phosphorus and other pollutants from water—without chemicals. Once saturated, the filter media becomes a slow-release fertilizer, closing the loop between clean water and nutrient recovery.

The Smart Choice for Your Property

Cleaner Water, Healthier Environment

Polonite® helps protect nearby lakes, rivers, and the sea by removing phosphorus that causes algae blooms and poor water quality.

Low Maintenance

The system works using natural gravity—no electricity, no moving parts, and minimal upkeep required.

Easy Filter Replacement

The filter only needs to be changed every few years and can be replaced in minutes.

Recycles Valuable Nutrients

The used filter contains phosphorus and lime and can be reused as a natural fertilizer for your garden or land.

Removes Harmful Bacteria

Polonite® also helps reduce bacteria like E. coli, offering extra protection for your family, your soil, and nearby water bodies.

Long-Term Savings

With low running costs, no chemicals, and long filter life, you save money over time while taking care of the environment.

Scientific research

Enclosure experiment in duckweed-overgrown ponds

Some ponds have become heavily overgrown by lemnids (duckweed; the tiny floating plants of the family Lemnaceae), and the site has also experienced blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) problems in the past. In this enclosure experiment, we assess sediments and overall ecosystem conditions, with a particular focus on how elevated pH can limit carbon dioxide (CO₂) availability in the water and thereby influence biological growth. There are many ponds facing similar challenges, and the results from this study are intended to be transferable to comparable sites.

Municipalities

Large Phosphorus Reduction System (Municipal Wastewater)

This state-of-the-art phosphorus reduction system treats municipal wastewater at flow rates of approximately 150 m³/day. The filter media is performing as designed, consistently producing effluent phosphorus concentrations well below the permitted target, providing stable compliance and operational reliability.

Homeowners

Small Systems for Environmentally Conscious Homeowners

A new, sustainable approach for homeowners who want to reduce their environmental footprint and protect local waters. By capturing phosphorus even from small, decentralized wastewater treatment systems, we help close the nutrient loop and support more circular nutrient management. The system delivers enhanced treatment performance, consistently meeting the target of 0.3 mg P/L in outlet water. It is designed for simple, low-maintenance operation and can also be configured for sites with no electricity or limited access.
